Objectives
To give students the opportunity to research and write on an advanced subject of their own choice relating to the fields of both Religious Studies and Global Development.Through individual supervision, to introduce students to the principles and practices of research and thesis writing and the specific theory, methods and context relating to their specific field of enquiry.
Skills outcomes
Conceiving, planning and executing a defined project with a bounded period of time; directed and self-directed reading in depth; independent evaluation of a body of work / the work of others; reflecting on interdisciplinarity; extended and complex forms of writing / sustaining an argument.
Syllabus
Independent study to research and write a dissertation of 12-15,000 words on aspect of the intersection of Religious Studies and Global Development.
Individual supervision, oral discussion and written feedback on: thesis planning and timescale; thesis scope, sources and bibliography; thesis methods (e.g. fieldwork methods, using historical documents, use of social theory, using oral and literary sources in the study of religions); thesis outline and structure; thesis draft.

Reading and note-taking, project design and planning; research (library based / empirical), drafting and redrafting account of outcomes of research. Final thesis preparation and presentation. 596 hours.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Submission of proposal to MA tutor usually by 31 February (or 31 May for those studying in a calendar year);Attendance at / level of discussion in individual supervisions;
Submission of thesis outline and draft.
