Module summary

This module studies the major impacts of transport on, and interactions with, energy, climate change and the environment at a local and global level, in the context of liveability and sustainability. Students will have the chance to consider policies and mitigation methods to reduce or eliminate the effects of transport as well as formal modelling and environmental impact assessment techniques and how these have been applied in practice to help make decisions about transport.

Objectives

To provide students with an understanding of the interactions between transport, energy, climate change and environmental issues, and ways in which negative effects may be mitigated or reduced. The module will consider transport, energy and environmental issues in the context of liveability and sustainability, including for example, an overview of health impacts of transport activities. Further, students will gain skills for managing sustainable futures, for example, modelling, making sense of data and analytical thinking.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1- Assess the main impacts of transport on energy, climate change and the environment and how these impacts can be assessed, modelled and mitigated;

2 - Perform a basic analysis of the environmental impacts of a transport scheme;

3 - Critically assess the relative importance of these impacts and suggest appropriate mitigation measures.
