Module summary
This module focuses on Social Psychology as used in Transport Studies, & this is contrasted with different theoretical understandings of travel demand. The module considers how Social Psychology might enhance understanding of the manifestation of social analytical concepts such as Peak Car, in ways that can support decision making in urban & sustainability planning. These understandings are taken forward into a future visioning exercise that is integral to the module.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should have acquired:- Understanding of the motivations for and constraints on travel behaviour from the Social Psychology perspective
- Comprehension of how Social Psychology understandings contrast with other perspectives & how they can enhance understandings
- An insight into public engagement through the future visioning exercise that will include techniques such as focus groups
- Understanding of how Social Psychology insights can inform public engagement (or vice versa) & support sustainable urban planning.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Understanding of Social Psychology theory, for example, the Theory of Planned Behaviour.
2. Understanding of other theoretical perspectives & social phenomena, including, for example, Transport Economics & Peak Car.
3. Understanding of the role of Social Psychology in generating solutions to problems & decision making.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Technical skills – understanding transferability of skills in Social Psychology theory operationisation (how it is used in practice), for example, the principles of Theory of Planned Behaviour questionnaire design & data collection. Skills can be used in fields such as Transport Planning, Health, Education & others.
2. Critical thinking, for example questionning norms to help create more sustainable futures.
3. Creativity.
4. Future thinking in relation to sustainability.
5. Communication – particularly writing a briefing note.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative feedback will be provided both individually & generically in class. Weekly seminars provide feedback on ideas & understanding through discussion. Specific coursework Q&A will be included in the seminar schedule. Students will be given guidance on writing briefing notes, & an opportunity to submit an outline of their proposed structure & content (one page maximum) for individual feedback. A workbook will be provided to help students record & develop their understanding of key theory taught during the module – through this students can record what they have learnt, questions they want to ask to clarify & develop their understanding & critical thinking around issues, actions they can take to develop their learning, & practice skills. A discussion board will also be provided as well as opportunity to ask questions individually.Methods of assessment
