Objectives
The module aims to ensure the students:1. Are prepared, linguistically and academically, for subsequent years of their degree.
2. Develop language and skills to study their other Year 1 modules.
3. Transition from Chinese high school to Transnational Education.
4. Meet the language requirements for progression to Year 2 of their degree.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, students will be able to:
1. Communicate intelligibly and confidently in spoken English.
2. Interact appropriately in synchronous English situations (seminars, discussions, one-to-one tutorials, lectures).
3. Demonstrate understanding of spoken academic English.
4. Demonstrate understanding of different written texts by responding to them appropriately.
5. Evaluate/synthesise different sources of information.
6. Produce relevant and accurate written language in response to set questions using different genres/rhetorical functions of English.
7. Demonstrate awareness and understanding of academic culture (including academic integrity).
8. Incorporate an appropriate range of academic vocabulary accurately into their writing and speaking
Skills outcomes
Students will develop the following skills:
1. Digital literacy

6. English language skills (listening strategies, reading strategies)*
*English is central to this programme. This module is the main way for students to improve their English language skills.

Private study
Independent Online Learning activities are designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop their English language knowledge and appropriate academic study skills. This component will be particularly important as a way of giving the students exposure to the English language, given that the module will be taught within a non-English speaking environment.Private study tasks relate to the content of the course and the preparation of any assessed pieces of work.
Please note: all delivery types and number of hours are subject to variation, depending on immediate delivery needs. An 'hour' refers to one session in the timetable which is approximately 45 minutes long.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students' progress is monitored on a continuous basis by each tutor through their participation in class activities and through the grading of assessed pieces of work.Methods of assessment

Students will only be eligible for a resit if they have made an attempt at each assessment, assuming no mitigating circumstances have prevented them from doing so. Resits will be based on single skills tests dependent on which one needs to be re-assessed. The format of the resit of each component will be as similar as possible to the assessment which was failed. Details of all assessments, procedures, rubrics and marking criteria will be available on Minerva for staff and students.
