This module gives you an understanding of the nature of labour markets and labour market institutions and will enable you to apply these theories so as to account for various market labour market phenomena.Pre-requisite qualifications: LUBS1940 Economics for Management OR LUBS1950 Economic Theory & Applications 1Objectives
The module provides an introduction to the subject area of labour economics, focusing in particular on the nature and significance of labour market institutions and the role of technology and innovation in bringing about change in labour market activity and behaviour of workers and businesses. It also provides students with a grounding in competing theoretical perspectives in labour economics.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Describe the nature and significance of labour markets and labour market institutions
- Interpret and evaluate competing theoretical perspectives in labour economics
- Analyse the structure of the UK labour market
- Identify and comment on gender discrimination in the labour market
- Evaluate the impact of labour market regulation and deregulation

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Course members attend five seminars to support the schedule of 10 Lectures. Seminar questions are placed on the VLE in advance of meetings, and students are asked to prepare written responses to the questions in advance and are invited to submit them to the Lecturer at the end of seminars to gain written feedback. Course members are also invited to submit an un-assessed essay to gain essay writing practice and additional guidance on their performance in advance of the examination.Methods of assessment
