Module summary

This module is split into two interlinked parts, the first focuses on the development of research knowledge and skills. The second focuses on the development of enterprise project skills, including problem solving and consultancy skills. Students then choose an enterprise organisational-based 7-week project undertaken in multicultural teams. Clients are provided with a report and students will reflect on their contribution to the group achievements. The course culminates in the production of a dissertation project proposal.

Objectives

This module will allow students to explore enterprise development in practice and the range of research methods appropriate for investigating enterprise. Graduates of this module will:
- Comprehend and critically evaluate theories, research methodologies and practice of enterprise and entrepreneurship
- Confidently engage in entrepreneurial activity (in their own enterprise or in other places of work) resulting in the creation of economic and/or social value

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have an understanding of enterprise development and developed their own research skills and project and consultancy skills. Specifically, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate in-depth critical knowledge of enterprise & entrepreneurship theories, research methodologies and concepts using techniques relevant to the discipline
- Apply and evaluate theory and practice in their own research, advanced scholarship or area of specific interest within the broader discipline
- Take a proactive and self-reflective role in a group setting
- Demonstrate the application of project management skills in the execution of individual and group tasks
- Develop professional relationships with potential collaborators, employers and/or clients
- Evaluate and contextualise current issues in enterprise and entrepreneurship

Skills outcomes
Development of understanding of personal skills, commercial awareness, self-management, problem solving, team working and research skills.


Syllabus

Module is in two parts:
1. Development of enterprise research knowledge and skills culminating in the production of a research methods essay and dissertation project proposal. s.
2. Development of enterprise project skills. Students will then choose an enterprise organisational-based 7-week project undertaken in multicultural teams (3-4). Assistance is provided to regional and national firms considering developing new products/services, processes or markets as part of a growth strategy. Clients are provided with a report as part of the module assessment and students will reflect on their contribution to the group achievements.

The module has a core text . There will also be a reading list of specified further reading.

The organisational-based projects will take place over 7 weeks and require teams of 3-4 students to engage in a project for an enterprise.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress issues will be addressed informally during the interactive workshop sessions.
Personal development and course progression will be monitored through online reflective blogs.
