Module summary

Jamie Oliver's 15, The Big Issue and the Eden Project are diverse examples of the sort of innovation, enterprise and creativity that can change people's lives, they are social enterprises. Social enterprises tackle a wide range of social and environmental issues at all scales. They have primarily social objectives with surpluses reinvested in the business or in the community. Through researching both enterprising people and their businesses, you will see how creativity, innovation and persistence can get the job done. You will develop insights into your own creative and innovative approaches to issues and reflect on how you can use these ideas while you are a student at Leeds. This experience may change your life too.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to explore real social enterprise through case studies, understand how they develop and about finding enterprising win - win solutions to problems. It will help students to develop insights into their own creative and innovative approaches to issues and reflect on how they can use these ideas whilst they are a student at Leeds. This module will use a range of interactive teaching methods to allow students to fully appreciate concepts, ideas and developments in the increasingly popular area of social enterprise.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Recognise how social enterprises operate and function
- Distinguish between public, private and social enterprise
- Recognise the drivers for social entrepreneurs

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Creatively apply basic social enterprise skills and attributes in presentations and team working
- Identify their own enterprise skills

The general outline of the syllabus is included below; these sessions make up the workshop portion of the module, with the talks from guest speakers making up the lectures section.

- Introduction (Defining a social enterprise)
- Networking (Green Business Networking workshop)
- National/International social enterprises (Understanding different SE and their place in society)
- Not just muesli and flip-flops (Not-for-profit sector - developing student goals)
- Planning exercise (Group work - planning and preparation)
- Models of social enterprise funding (Creating a SE from Hyde Park)
- Stakeholders (Understanding who is involved in the SE)
- Project presentations (Group project presentation)
- Characteristics of social entrepreneurs (Traits and attributes)
- Students as social entrepreneurs (Personal characteristics, e.g. Myers Briggs)

Students must attend the class workshops and complete a personal project in their own time.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
