Module summary

During the 'Year in Research' at LUBS you will gain an awareness of alternative approaches to research in your chosen discipline, the stages of an ethical year-long research project, research strategies, how to review the literature, data collection, data analysis in the project area, including within an international context, writing up and reporting the research project to a wider audience.At the end of the year, you will be able to:1. Design a feasible research project plan;2. Implement the planned research project in the chosen divisional research worksite;3. Produce a project research paper ; and4. Reflect upon the learning experience, identify and critically evaluate how new skills and knowledge may be transferred and used as PhD student and/or in another business research workplace within the LUBS Academy and/or other external Centre.The module will be organised around a key LUBS research discipline area and be determined by those that have been influential in setting the agenda for research and debate within the LUBS academy and REF. Attendance at the opening masters level modules (lectures, workshop and seminar series as appropriate to each module) will focus on developing the students' knowledge of the principles and practice of research, including developing an understanding of research project design. In consultation with project supervisors, students will be required to write an effective research proposal, complete a literature review and eventually prepare a paper for presentation at an academic conference (which can be the LUBS PhD conference).You will be supported throughout with a named supervisor.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide students with a broad, critical and ethical understanding of the practicalities of modern day business research, knowledge of the main issues and debates in a specific research discipline within the LUBS Academy and how their research fits within an international context.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Plan their contribution to a research project based within the business school
- Identify and justify a research problem
- Evaluate competing methodological approaches (of a quantitative or qualitative nature) in a chosen research area
- Select and justify appropriate methods of data collection
- Critically analyse conceptual and empirical material and be able to position this within the global context
- Identify and discuss differing ethical issues in business research
- Plan a business research proposal and/or projects

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
Transferable
- Working effectively as part of a group
- Apply critical thinking to resolving research problems


Syllabus

Indicative content
The students will be supported through the research process with a named supervisor.
Students will attend Master level modules (but not complete the assessments) as appropriate such as:
- Understanding your discipline
- Introduction to research design and data analysis
Students will then plan and carry out an agreed research project. Key outputs will be a research paper and a conference presentation.
Progress will be monitored via monthly completion of an online log and the collection of related evidence of research/transferable skills development (by the Placement tutor).
Progress will also be monitored through regular meetings with their research supervisor during the course of the placement.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will also be monitored through regular meetings with their research supervisor during the course of the placement. Students will also receive a visit from their placement-tutor (if based in the UK).
