Objectives

This module aims to provide training in planning a programme of research and preparing a complete research proposal in the form of a grant proposal Case for Support.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have:
- completed and gained experience in grant proposal writing and project planning;
- received training in health and safety aspects of the research project;
- successfully completed a series of practical competency tests;
- demonstrated an awareness of working safely in the laboratory.

Syllabus

Students will outline the work they will undertake during the course of their research project in the form of a full research proposal. This should demonstrate that they have an understanding of the background literature, recognition of the problem they are addressing, and sets out their detailed experimental plans. In addition, students will receive training in the health and safety aspects of laboratory work. Students will also complete a series of practical activities to demonstrate competency in the laboratory. This will include activities such as preparing solutions, using pH meters, using balances and centrifuges, pouring gels, loading gels, staining and photographing gels, conducting enzyme assays, streaking plates, identifying appropriate controls, interpreting the data generated and safe disposal of materials.

There will be regular meetings with the project supervisor, who will assist students in defining the research problem, provide guidance on experimental design and help establish a timetable for the work students plan to carry out.
