Module summary

Interested in working in Arts, Culture, Heritage or Creative Industries? Want to know how to develop and prepare yourself for each stage of the recruitment process?This module aims to prepare you for this growing and competitive sector in the following key areas:- Identity – develop your self-awareness, being enterprising and how this relates to your course- Work place – understand how you fit within the workplace- Professional Image – how to articulate your professional image- Digital Literacy – develop confidence in expressing yourself digitallyThere will be the opportunity to work with an external organisation to make a difference, create change and have a positive impact.This is a very practical and interactive module. It will be delivered by specialist career consultants and professionals including Alumni who work in the sector giving a ‘real’ view of what it means to work and thrive in this sector.There is no exam as assessment is through coursework. You will undertake a range of written and practical activities including a project with an organisation.

Objectives

This module is intended to support AHC students with regards to raising their awareness of and suitability for a career within the Creative Industries (including Arts, Culture and Heritage). It aims to enhance students' ability to reflect upon the breadth of subject specific and transferable skills gained both through their current degree and extra-curricular experience and crucially how they can then apply these within the Creative Industries. This will be further enhanced through the opportunity to work directly with an appropriate external organisation in order to identify current sector issues and to subsequently provide a practical, creative solution.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:

1. Articulate their depth of understanding through an audit of the current and future needs of organisations that operate within the Creative, Arts, Culture and Heritage sector
2. Compare and contrast their current skill-sets and gaps in relation to the employment requirements of the sector and to formulate a personal development plan in response
3. Identify and select a current issue facing the creative industries sector and formulate an appropriate response to that need via a professional presentation
4. Operate as an effective team member through an understanding of their own role and those of others
5. Evaluate the role and impact of enterprise and entrepreneurship within the Creative Industries
6. Demonstrate their digital capabilities through the development of a tangible professional workplace image

Students will study and experience the following elements both in and outside the classroom:
• Reflective practice
• Skills auditing and mapping
• Sector landscape and employment needs
• Enterprise and entrepreneurship
• Consultancy, freelancing and portfolio development
• Digital capabilities and self image
• Successful teamwork
• Presentation skills
• Developing practical solutions to real-life issues

Private study

All students are expected to undertake a minimum of 2 hrs per week in private study preparing for their weekly taught sessions. This is in addition for the work to be undertaken to develop and create their assessed submissions which include a group presentation, build personal networks and an individual resource.
