Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:1. understand basic colour theory in art and design practice;
2. be able to work with a variety of media and materials to create balanced visual composition;
3. have gained an understanding of figurative and non figurative composition;
4. have gained an understanding of the process of abstraction;
5. have gained an understanding of their own practice in relation to contemporary and historical trends in art and design,
6. proceed to level one of undergraduate programme in design.
Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of colour theory in relation to art and design practice
-Demonstrate the ability to utilise a variety of media in the production of visual compositions
- Understand the use of figuration and abstraction in relation to their own art and design practice
- Understand how to contextualise practical work through historic and contemporary visual research
Skills outcomes
Colour mixing, painting, printing and collage techniques, understanding the differences in texture and surface, use of different materials, how to use art and design terms to classify work eg abstract, figurative
Syllabus
The module will cover the following topics:
1. the colour circle, understanding of tone and use of complementary colour
2. multilayered compositions
3. the characteristic of surface and texture
4. painting techniques
5. collage techniques
6. printing techniques
7. classification of art and design forms.
In addition the module will look at specific art and design phenomena and the way in which visual information is classified in terms of process and intention, such as the differences between non-figurative and figurative work, geometric and lyrical abstraction. Emphasis will be placed upon the development of the individuals critical visual judgement and an awareness of art and design in terms of its context and execution.
The module includes two studio-based projects each with an equal assessment weighting.

- Library based studies: 30 hours- Additional portfolio preparation: 117 hours
- Editing and presentation: 20 hours.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Critiques given at appropriate stages of the module during semesters one (a minimum of two per project)- Submission of projects in weeks three, six and eleven
- Regular contact with relevant staff members.
