Module summary

This module aims to develop and expand an understanding of the fundamental principles of the fashion industry. Acquire an appreciation of the major developments in design & product development innovation. Understand the critical issues affecting the fashion industry globally, have an enhanced awareness of the economic and commercial role of design within the fashion industry towards improved competitive performance.

Objectives

To introduce students to the fundamental concepts and principles of the fashion industry and its management. Delivered through a series of lectures, students will be introduced to the critical issues affecting the fashion industry globally.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature and dynamics of the global textiles and fashion industry,
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of retail and marketing strategies, management of resources & operations within those organisations;
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role innovation and technology can play in addressing some of the key challenges the industry faces in the future,
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role of individuals in evolving the direction for industry.

Skills outcomes
-Ability to critically examine and appraise a range of literature about the international fashion industry.
-Ability to critique the key questions and issues with regards to future directions within the industry.
-Communicate, through writing, concepts and theories clearly and coherently.


Syllabus

This module will examine:
• The evolution of the concept of ‘fashion’,
• How the term ‘industry’ is defined, developments within the global fashion industry, its current structure and size.
• Design and development of a fashion range: the process, the teams and their management, research that needs to be conducted, technologies that are utilised.
• Strategic issues in product development and the links between the processes and how they are managed according to their market levels.
• Relationships between design and retail: influences along the supply chain for the product and businesses involved.
• Business models within the fashion and textiles industry: the where centres of production are and manufacturing networks, supply chains and value chain concept, the relationships that are formed between different types of businesses and the range of impacts that this has on the geographic regions involved.
• Sustainability (environmental and ethical issues): a global perspective, efforts different countries are undertaking towards a sustainable fashion industry, the significant issues and bodies of experts involved as well as the consumer.
• Future directions for the global fashion and textiles industry.
