On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand basic theories and concepts relating to Korea's economic and political development
- appreciate the historic and contemporary dimensions to these twin development processes
- critically analyse and inter-relate different aspects of Korea's economic and political development, for example in relation to developments statism
- evaluate the connections between domestic and international factors in Korea's economic and politico-security relations.

Syllabus

This module studies the political, economic and international dimensions of the Korean nation. It primarily concentrates on the South Korea nation-state but also on North Korea.

To set the context of study, students are first introduced to basic aspects of Korean history, culture and society. Students then examine the different political systems and paths of political development on the Korean peninsula.

This builds the foundation for a range of political economy studies on South and North Korea, including:
- economic development and the role of the developmental state: the chaebol conglomerate firms (eg, Samsung) and Korean business systems
- the 1997/98 financial crisis and post-crisis economic policy reform
- globalisation and economic nationalism.

This last theme provides the initial interface between the domestic and the international in Korea's politics and economy, thereafter followed by studies on:
- international security and inter-Korea relations
- Korea in the East Asia region
- Korea in the wider world.
