Pre-requisite qualifications

Good performance at Levels 1 and 2 (average of 60 or just below). Students going to European destinations, who have not already got an A-Level in the language of their host country, will be required to take at least one foreign language elective at Leeds (if available). Students will also be encouraged to take a pre-sessional intensive language course in the host country.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:

- demonstrate their ability to cope with a significant change in their environment and adapt to a new culture;
- broaden their understanding and knowledge of their subject specialisms;
- gain a deeper understanding of the country in which they are studying;
- face the linguistic (where applicable), intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- develop transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.

Learning outcomes
To gain a deeper understanding of the country in which they are studying; improve their foreign language skills (in exchanges where the language is not English); benefit from academic study in an intellectual environment different from the 'home' environment; develop transferrable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.

Skills outcomes
Qualities and transferable skills necessary for working in another academic system and living in another country.

Enhanced practical language skills, both written and oral, in some cases in a language other than English, as required by demands of study in another country.


Syllabus

To be arranged with the host institution, in accordance with the English Year Abroad Learning Contract and subject to the approval of the School of English. The study will normally comprise a combination of taught modules in the appropriate discipline and/or allied subject(s) chosen to complement the Leeds degree programme; up to 40% of the credits taken may relate to the language and/or culture of the host country.
