Module summary

This module introduces you to the idea of inter-disciplinary study within the UK, and how arts and humanities disciplines are taught and understood within the UK context. You will be invited to work alongside other students of diverse national origins, and to reflect on your own experience of education, allowing this experience to inform your studies at Leeds.The module explores various models of learning, how the self is formed, and how this relates to our role as individuals and as global citizens. Throughout the module, you will be prepared for further study across a range of arts and humanities disciplines through an inter-disciplinary approach; you will develop an understanding of theories and practices of rhetoric and communication, and their relevance for different audiences.

Objectives

Students taking this module will:

• be prepared for undergraduate study within the arts and humanities;
• explore the perspectives of different disciplines and cultures in order to consider a key theme or question;
• explore the opportunities and challenges of cross-disciplinary study;
• consider different ideals of education;
• explore different conceptions of the good human life, drawing on cultural contexts;
• vary their style of communication to suit the needs of diverse audiences.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students will have:

[1] learned about different cultural expectations within different disciplines;
[2] deepened their understanding of a given topic through the application of different cultural and discipline perspectives;
[3] developed an awareness of the ways in which human beings learn, different ideas of individual and social well-being, and how these concepts might enrich one another;
[4] reflected on the appropriateness of various styles of communication when addressing different audiences.

Syllabus

The module will be divided into 3 thematic blocks:

[1] Students will become familiar with the cultural context of learning in the UK, and the different learning experiences that they bring with them. They will examine these learning experiences and consider how they might approach their studies in relation to this and to each discipline that they explore within the arts and humanities.
[2] Students will apply the understanding from block one, to explore different conceptions of the good human life and how the notion of the self is developed.
[3] Students will be taught how to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and will have the opportunity to develop their own 'voice' through oral presentations in class.

Private study

22 2-hour lecture/workshops
Tutor-led sessions with multiple opportunities for discussion and group work. The workshops will give space for content delivery from the tutor, and for discussion reflection and action in relation to this.

3 1-hour tutorials (seminar)
These sessions will give students a clear space to reflect upon their progress in relation to their overall study and, more specifically, in relation to the module assignments.

22 1-hour seminars (guided activity via VLE)
This will encourage reflection and engagement around the class reading for the week, through a variety of activities including (but not limited to): questionnaires, exploration of social media, videos, and interactive online forums.

22 1-hour discussion forum contributions
The discussion forum will enable students to test out their ideas in relation to the course reading. These sessions will allow students to engage with the work of their peers and utilise the forums.

309-hours of private study: skills development and research for essay writing and oral communication techniques
Students will engage with further reading and study, beyond guided activities.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The module will have multiple opportunities for formative feedback on work in progress. Some formal time is arranged for this via tutorials. However, it is expected that students would be developing their work throughout the module, and seeking guidance and feedback in relation to this throughout.

Verbal Presentation re-sit: may be submitted as a short video of the student delivering their presentation and/or speaking over their presentation slides. In light of the effect of COVID-19 and lockdown restrictions on students' learning experiences, the School of PRHS have made the decision to modify assessment in Semester 2 modules in the 2020-21 academic year. Changes may involve reducing the number of assessment points (e.g. assessing one essay rather than two) or reducing word counts where it is possible to do so whilst protecting the integrity of the module's Learning Outcomes. Information on any changes to assessment for this module is available to enrolled students in the Minerva module area, and can also be sought from the module leader or the PRHS SES team.
