Module summary

Are you thinking of a career in teaching Physical Education or coaching sport? Not sure which one is for you? Would you like to know more about each discipline? This module offers you the opportunity to explore each career and help you to find which is right for you. This module is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of working with children in a Physical Education and Sport environment. The module will consider the difference in pedagogy between teaching and coaching and how each approach can be applied to get the best out of children aged between 5 -19 years. The module covers both the theoretical and practical application of both disciplines and as such should develop knowledge and understanding from an applied perspective. This approach will allow students to reflect on their personal skills, strengths and weaknesses and their future aspirations which underpins the assessment methodology of the module. Objectives

Students will be able to understand:
- Current education policies and strategies which affect the teaching of PE and coaching of sport;
- The pedagogy of teaching and coaching;
- Lesson and session planning and high quality delivery of Physical Education and Sport;
- How to undertake a critical evaluation of teaching and coaching practice;
- How to reflect on their personal development and its impact moving forward;
- The employment requirements for both sectors.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Analyse the pedagogy behind successful teaching and coaching;
- Analyse and evaluate the key components of high quality teaching and coaching;
- Construct and evaluate a high quality teaching and coaching lesson and session plan;
- Apply evidence-based knowledge to the practice of teaching Physical Education and coaching sport;
- Discuss personal strengths and weaknesses and evaluate the impact of those on both graduate attributes and their chosen career path.

Syllabus

- Be introduced to some of the principles behind teaching, planning and observation.
- Be introduced to some of the principles behind the coaching process (planning, delivering and evaluating) and observation.
- Plan and deliver a PE and School Sports (PESS) festival to primary school aged children.
- Undertake an evaluation of effectiveness of delivery observed and delivered.
- Meet the experts - Teaching and Coaching employers.
- Attend individual tutorials to monitor and discuss progress.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Throughout both lectures and seminars the session lead will plan activities and challenges that present formative feedback opportunities. These will include strategies such as;
- Practical session with peer and teacher feedback
- Conditioned situations aimed at testing knowledge
- One to one discussions in tutorials
