Module summary
This module offers a unique chance to learn about some of the aspects that need to be considered when engaging in a variety of higher risk adventure sports. Through a number of practical and theoretical lectures, students will be able to make informed decisions regarding the actual rather than the perceived risks of participation in these activities, as well as develop their knowledge and understanding of safety testing and its practical application.Objectives
The module aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of the elements of risk, psychology, physiology and equipment.Students will:
- Study the generic aspects that can be applied in and to specific adventure sports contexts in order to improve the safety and enjoyment of the participants when taking part either as an individual or as an instructed activity;
- Study the applicability/use/dilemma of the above when taking part in some of the following adventure sports: caving and pot holing; fell walking/running; hang gliding; inland and sea kayaking/canoeing; mountain biking; mountaineering; orienteering; paragliding; rock climbing; sailing; skiing; wind surfing, or any other identified adventure sport.
- Develop their individual and group presentation skills and understand how to improve these.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the ‘Conformité Européenne' (CE) marks for an item of Person Protective Equipment (PPE);
- Apply knowledge and understanding of risk to develop an appropriate risk assessment;
- Apply knowledge and understanding of weather as an environmental factor in the participation of a range of different outdoor activities;
- Demonstrate a range of different communication skills through the development of a presentation on participation in an adventurous activity;
- Interpret the data from testing, and understand the complexity of selecting and using helmets used in adventurous activities.

- Fundamentals of the British weather;
- Helmets & the CE test;
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE);
- Physiology & psychology of survival;
- Psychology of participation in adventure sports;
- Risk assessment.
Practical sessions in the following:
- Helmet testing.
Structured research into:
- PPE;
- Risk assessment;
- Weather charts;
- Survival.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Registers of attendance at tutorials, lectures, seminars and practical classes kept. Absences followed up by module manager.Students will be provided with feedback forms at the completion of the module for formative feedback. A selection of students will meet with the external examiner to provide feedback.
