Module summary

It covers the physical, mathematical and computational aspects related to Radionuclide Imaging applied to Medicine and Biology for diagnostic and research proposes.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the different scientific and technological aspects in radionuclide imaging and what are the relevant clinical and preclinical applications.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Describe what is radionuclide Imaging, what are its fundamental principles and how the field has evolved over the years
2. Identify, characterise and analyse the methods of radiopharmaceutical production for radionuclide imaging
3. Explain the basic physical interactions of radiation with matter and convey the principles of dosimetry of internally distributed radionuclides
4. Assess and compare the use of different radiotracers in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
5. Explain in detail the concept of image reconstruction and how it is utilised to obtain a 3D image using SPECT and PET
6. Provide comprehensive examples of clinical and preclinical use of radionuclide imaging
7. Describe dynamic PET and SPECT and explain why are they useful
8. Clarify and prioritise the key limitations of the existing techniques
9. Contextualise what molecular multimodality imaging is

- Basic principles of radionuclide imaging;
- Major breakthroughs in medical imaging with radionuclides;
- Radiopharmaceutical production;
- Interaction of ionising radiation with matter;
- Composition of the nucleus and radioactive decay;
- Radiation detectors and gamma photon counting systems;
- SPECT and PET scanners and hybrid systems;
- Image reconstruction in SPECT and PET;
- Image processing, kinetic modelling and quantitative radionuclide imaging;
- Clinical and preclinical applications of PET and SPECT;
- New and future developments.

Private study

Students will be provided will pre lecture study materials which they will be expected to read to aid with their learning during formal lectures. They will also be expected to prepare materials for a poster presentation which will require independent online learning. Preparation for the examination will require private study of lecture materials and recommended reading texts. Furthermore, the students will be given two sets of formative multiple choice questions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through question and answer sessions which will take place at the beginning of each lecture or through formative MCQ exercises post lecture.
Student progress will also be monitored through tutorial sessions which will clarify any questions students have.
