Objectives

The objectives of this module are to enable students to:
• Develop a critical understanding of the emerging field of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy using a range of theoretical and cultural policy frameworks;
• Understand and critique related theoretical concepts such as Arts Management, Arts Marketing, Cultural Leadership, Cultural Entrepreneurship and Change Management, and apply them to the field of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy;
• Critically investigate contemporary Business and Arts Management theory and models and explore the challenges of applying this to the strategic development of twenty-first century arts organisations.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Contextualise the emerging field of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy and situate it within and alongside relevant theoretical models and policy frameworks
• Discuss and critique appropriate theories from Arts Management, Arts Marketing, Cultural Leadership, Cultural Entrepreneurship and Change Management, and apply them to the field of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy
• Identify and articulate the challenges faced by contemporary arts leaders and critically explore the artistic, social, business and policy drivers which contextualise arts organizations’ mission development and delivery.

Skills outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to define and critically discuss the key issues impacting on arts fundraising, philanthropy and leadership.


Syllabus

This module will be delivered by a range of experts in the field who will introduce participants to practical and theoretical considerations related to
arts fundraising and leadership. The module will explore the history of arts
and cultural philanthropy; investigate underlying cultural policy models and debates; situate arts fundraising within broader the broader fields of Arts Marketing and Management; explore the relative utility of Strategic Management tools, models and principles for leading contemporary arts organizations; apply relevant concepts and theories pertaining to cultural entrepreneurship; and investigate findings from the Change Management
and Cultural Leadership literatures regarding the process of changing the culture of arts fundraising.

Private study

• Preparatory reading is required for lectures (50 hours).
• Students will need to take and organise careful notes: to keep the information needed for later use and to check understanding of the material (20 hours).
• Students will need to research and gather an extensive range of resources: books, journal articles and electronic resources to complete their individual essays (100 hours).
• Students will need to engage in effective planning to produce a well argued, critical essay
(10 hours)
• Students will need to develop strong reflective writing skills by drafting, completing and proof-reading their essays
and complying with appropriate presentational styles and academic conventions (80 hours).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students’ progress will be monitored formatively through in-class discussion in seminars and by regular question and answer sessions following lectures and seminars. Summative assessment will comprise the group presentations and an individual essay.
