Handing in date Mid Semester and the first day of the examination period Form of teaching: Seminars Module OutlineThis module aims to provide students with an understanding of the EU's role in the world, in particular its role in promoting economic development and democracy. Having traced the development of EU development policy from Yaoundé to Contonou, it goes on to discuss in detail the division of labour between the EU and its member states, examine the role played by the EU in specific regions, and the role of ECHO. It then goes on to highlights the extent to which this role has either a positive or negative impact upon third countries by using a series of case studies (democracy and human rights, good governance, the environment, trade and aid, migration etc). It finally explores how EU actions in this area might develop in the future. 1. critically examine the motivation for EU development policy in an increasingly globalised world;
2. critically examine the impact of EU action on third countries, especially in the areas of economic development and democracy promotion in developing countries and Eastern Europe;
3. use a variety of case studies to illustrate the above.
