Pre-requisite qualifications

Students will be expected to meet the School criteria for the progression to MSc Engineering Geology project module.

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

- To enable candidates to use the knowledge gained and to practice skills learned;
- To provide the opportunity for students to gain experience with practicing professionals on real problems in the field in which they seek employment; and/or
- To engage in a minor research project;
- To enable candidates to show initiative, innovation and critical ability;
- To gain experience of the production of a well written, properly formatted, formal report of a standard appropriate to professional practice within the context of a piece of independent work.

Syllabus

Students are provided with a choice of broad subject areas/project themes. Individual topics will be allocated to students in discussion with the theme leader. Project titles will include a range of academic and industry facing topics with the latter being will be controlled by what data are can be provided by private practice within the project timescales.

The projects involve any or all of:

- literature survey;
- field and site work;
- laboratory testing;
- analysis;
- design and modelling.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Meetings with dissertation tutor. It is expected that students will have c. 6 meetings with supervisors. Such meetings may include one or all of industry visits; site visits/fieldwork and progression meetings. The detail of these meetings will be dependent on the nature of the project undertaken.

Projects involving fieldwork will require a risk assessment and students will receive advice on this process by the project supervisor.

Students should present an outline set of aims and objectives during a supervisory meeting at the early stages of the project to allow comment and feedback.

All students will present a 15 minute project seminar in the latter half of the project. Feedback / comment will be provided by some or all of the academic staff at the time of the seminar, and further feedback from the wider peer group is encouraged.

Re-sit assessment will take the same form as the original attempt. The same requirements are expected with regards to format, length, word limit and academic performance. Given that one of the learning objectives of this module is the production of a professional standard report, grammar, spelling, structure and presentation will always form part of the assessment.
