Objectives

To provide students with an basic understanding of the anatomy of the Human musculoskeletal system.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- use basic anatomical terminology to describe position and movement;
- describe the basic structure and function of connective tissues, cartilage, bone, muscle, ligaments and tendons;
- identify the bones of the vertebral column, thoracic cage, upper and lower limbs, pelvic and pectoral girdle;
- describe their major bony landmarks and functions;
- describe the structure and function of the different types of bone joints and be able to give named examples;
- demonstrate knowledge of the main anatomical features of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee and ankle joint and
- describe the type of each joint and the movements possible at each joint;
- identify the main muscles involved in movement of the upper limb, pectoral girdle, lower limb and pelvic girdle, and
- describe their function(s);
- describe the basic structure and function of the heart and lungs;
- discuss the anatomy surrounding given examples of common sports injuries.

Syllabus

A taught (10 credit) module that provides an overview of the structure and function of the human musculoskeletal system. Areas to be covered include: basic anatomical terminology, connective tissues (bone, cartilage, muscle, tendons and ligaments), joints types and joint function, the upper limb (pectoral girdle, shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand), lower limb (pelvic girdle, hip, thigh, knee, calf, ankle and foot) and trunk (vertebral column and thorax).

The anatomy of common sporting injuries that relate to the anatomy being considered will be discussed where appropriate.
