Module summary

This intensive Chinese language module is suitable for students who have learnt about 500 Chinese characters and are familiar with essential features of Chinese syntax. It progresses fast and aims to help students to achieve a lower-intermediate level overall through a range of classes – lecture, drill, listening, speaking and practical. Students will be engaged in an interactive and communicative learning environment and work with both simplified Chinese characters (read, write and type) and traditional Chinese characters (read). Students are encouraged and supported in developing into efficient autonomous learners.

Objectives

This module is designed for students who have learnt about 500 Chinese characters and are familiar with essential features of Chinese syntax. The objectives of the module are to help students further expand their existing knowledge of the Chinese language and further improve their four basic skills in a balanced way so that they reach a lower-intermediate level overall, become efficient autonomous learners and be ready for their Year Abroad. New vocabulary is introduced in both simplified and traditional Chinese characters. Students are required to read and write the former and to read the latter.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, successful students will be able to:
• Converse in Chinese in a culturally appropriate manner about a number of topics, including those likely to take place in a Chinese-speaking community during students’ Year Abroad.
• Read and write a total of 1000 simplified Chinese characters approximately and also recognise these characters in the traditional form.
• Have a more in-depth understanding of Chinese syntax and command of all major sentence patterns.
• Comprehend materials written in the vocabulary and structures that have been introduced on familiar topics.
• Write compositions effectively and clearly on familiar topics using a fairly wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures.
• Translate dialogues and paragraphs on familiar topics making appropriate use of vocabulary and structures that have been introduced.
