Module summary

Beginners Mandarin Chinese 10 credits is for students who have not previously studied Mandarin Chinese. The emphasis is on achieving a basic level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing and an introduction to Chinese culture. You may want to learn a new language or you may already have an interest in China - whatever your reason, this module provides a fascinating insight into the country and the language and will equip you with some basic language ability and intercultural awareness.

Objectives

This module introduces students to Mandarin Chinese and develops their ability to communicate at a beginner's level. Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for this level. They should also develop an awareness of Chinese culture and be able to advise a friend on how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic 'faux pas' when speaking Chinese in the situations covered by the module.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to use, commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered
- Extract accurately the key information from audio and or/visual material
- Understand and make themselves understood by a proficient language speaker in specific contexts
- Demonstrate a basic awareness of grammar
- Demonstrate a basic awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Chinese and English

- Exchange personal information about themselves and their family
- Understanding and expressing numbers, the time, days and dates
- Basic shopping and bargaining
- Talks about likes and dislikes
- Talks about daily routine
- Cultural awareness
- Eating out
