Pre-requisites

Using GIS (GEOG5020) and Using Arc/Info GEOG5040).

This module is approved as an Elective

Objectives

On completion of the module students should have acquired: i) an understanding of the potential for the application of GIS in the handling of environmental data. ii) an appreciation of the utility of GIS in environmental management and policy making. iii) a critical understanding of the difficulties and limitations of using GIS in environmental applications. iv) skills in the application of GIS and models in environmental analysis and problem solving with particular reference to research design and techniques. v) field-based skills in the collection of data using GPS, and its integration with GIS data bases.

1. Space-time variability. 2. Working with environmental data. 3. Error and uncertainty. 4. Interpolating environmental datasets. 5. Grid-based models. 6. Terrain analysis 1: the basics. 7. Terrain analysis 2: applications. 8. Hydrological modelling 1: catchment models. 9. Hydrological modelling 2: run off models. 10 Land suitability modelling. 11. Spatial decision support systems

Teaching methods

Lectures 11 x 1 hour, 11 x 1 hour seminars and 11 x 2 hours practicals.

Methods of assessment

5 x practical assignments (10% each) to be submitted in weeks 18, 20, 21, 23 and 25; 1 x 1500 word computer project (3000 word equivalent, 50%) to be submitted in week 28. Non submission by the due date will incur the normal university penalties.
