Module summary

- What do we mean when we say that X has been convicted of a criminal offence such as rape or murder? - What are the ingredients of such offences which must be established before a conviction is possible? This course is designed to provide an introduction to the operation of criminal law in the courts.- This module is taught by weekly seminars in semester 2. - Assessment is by one 3,000 word essay.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:
(a) articulate the basic principles of criminal liability;
(b) use their knowledge of criminal law to analyse practical situations and to identify the offences which may have been committed on a given set of facts.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progression is monitored through their attendance and performance in seminars.

In order to ensure students are given the best possible chance to do well in their summative assessment, the module leader will:
- continue to dedicate a one 1.5 hour session to essay writing guidance;
- set a formative essay;
- provide students with ‘model’ essays from a previous year, which do not overlap with any of their own essay titles.
