Objectives

This module aims to introduce students to the main principles and developments in human resource management (HRM) in different types of employment situation. It evaluates the impact of HRM change, its implications for the management of employees, the economic labour market, social and cultural contexts of HRM, and the varied patterns of people management that currently exist.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Identify the main principles and developments in human resource management (HRM) in different types of employment situations
- Evaluate the impact of HRM change
- Assess the implications of HRM for the management of employees
- Recognise the diverse range of issues that emerge within HRM,
- Critically analyse the varied patterns of people management that currently exist
- Critically engage with current issues research and scholarship in the field of HRM
- Identify, describe and evaluate shifts and transformations in the global economy and place their knowledge of HRM theories, policies and practice within global and local contexts

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

Transnational corporations and their impacts on national and local labour markets
Skills and management practice and the changing role of the corporate HR Department
Pay and reward systems
Training, recruitment and selection
Appraisal and employee representation and involvement systems
