Objectives

This module builds on the fundamental concepts identified in the level 1 introduction to biomechanics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- describe and quantify human motion clearly and unambiguously using both scalar and vector measures;
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between linear and angular motion;
- demonstrate an understanding of Newton's laws of motion and their angular equivalents and their implications for the quantitative analysis of human motion;
- demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of force, and moments of force and their implications for affecting human motion;
- demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of inertia, momentum, impulse and conservation of momentum and their influence on human motion;
- demonstrate an understanding of stability and equilibrium and their importance in human performance;
- demonstrate an understanding of mechanical work, power and energy and their implications for sport or exercise;
- describe the mechanical variables affecting the behaviour of bodies moving through fluids and demonstrate an understanding of their implications for sport and exercise;
- demonstrate lab specific skills relating to kinematic and kinetic data collection and analysis;
- demonstrate data manipulation and presentation;
- demonstarte the use of IT and in particular Microsoft Excel.

Syllabus

Semester 1
- Basic descriptors of human motion; distance, speed, displacement, velocity, acceleration
- Linear and angular kinematics
- Newton's three laws of motion and their angular equivalents
- Factors affecting human motion; force concepts, moments, inertia, momentum and conservation of momentum, impulse.

Semester 2
- Gravity, mass and weight
> Projectile motion
> Implications for balance and stability in Sport and Exercise
> Implications for Sport and Exercise.

- Impacts and materials
> Impulse, momentum transfer and the elastic behaviour of materials.

- Mechanical work, power and energy and energy conservation in Sport and Exercise.

- Introduction to fluid motion; buoyancy, pressure, drag and lift.

- Lab skills: force platform and video analysis techniques.
