GCSE or equivalent in mathematics

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students without A level mathematics (or equivalent) should have a key set of skills to enable their learning in future teaching of additional mathematics or in modules with significant mathematical skills requirements.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module students should:
- Have the ability to manipulate basic mathematical expressions.
- Have a knowledge of basic mathematics, consistent with A-level standard, enabling them to pursue their studies in an engineering discipline at degree level.
- Have developed basic problem solving skills.


Syllabus

Basic algebra: algebraic fractions, rearranging expressions; straight lines, quadratic equations, trigonometry: trigonometric ratios, sine and cosine rules, the circular functions; exponential and logarithmic functions, differential calculus: first principles, product rule, quotient rule, chain rule, the second derivative, stationary points; an introduction to definite and indefinite integration.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Two mock open-book exams (40 minutes each) regularly spaced through the semester, preceding the main open-book exams. Class examples and problems sessions. Access to lecturer throughout the semester (via appointment) in either small groups or individually.
