Taught: Semester 1 (Sep to Jan) View Timetable

Year running 2021/22

This module is mutually exclusive with

CIVE5145MAdvanced Steel and Composite Design

This module is not approved as an Elective

- To introduce to students the concept of advanced steel design and composite construction and their applications in engineering.
- To provide a basic means for design and analysis of steel and composite structures and to familiarise students with a range of typical processing techniques.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

1. apply their prior knowledge and understanding of the scientific and mathematical principles of engineering to design steel and composite structures;

2. have an appreciation of the fundamental design philosophies adopted in the area of design of unbraced steel structures;

3. apply mathematical and computer-based models for solving problems in engineering and be able to assess the limitations of each particular case;

4. be aware of the latest research and developing technologies related to the design of composite structures.

Skills outcomes
General learning outcomes (UK-SPEC): the ability to apply new concepts and methods (in the context of advanced steel & composite design).

Specific learning outcomes (UK-SPEC):
- Underpinning Science & Mathematics (Knowledge and understanding of mathematical models as applied to steel & composite design;
- An appreciation of the limits of such models);
- Engineering Analysis (the ability to apply mathematical models to solve problems in structural engineering;
- the ability to assess the limitations of particular cases);
- Design (broader knowledge and understanding of design processes for structural steel elements and systems);
- Engineering Practice (a thorough understanding of how the physical and mechanical properties of steel influence design methods and construction processes).

Each of the following topics will focus on fundamental behaviour. Where appropriate, reference will also be made to the design guidance provided in national and international codes of practice:

- Introduction/revision Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4, Multi-storey Buildings;
- Structural integrity and robustness: Progressive Collapse and Avoiding Disproportionate Collapse;
- Sway Stability (Braced and Un-braced Multi-storey Frames Design);
- Design of Portal Frames;
- Design of Multi-storey Rigid Frames (Moment Connections);
- Design of Perforated (Cellular, Castellated, and non-standard elliptical and sinusodial) Beams;
- Design of Steel-Concrete Composite: Metal Decking;
- Design of Steel-Concrete Composite: Shear Interaction;
- Design of Steel-Concrete Composite: Precast Hollow-core units;
- Design of Steel-Concrete Composite: Columns;
- Design of Steel-Concrete Composite: Connections;
- Fire Engineering.
