Pre-requisite qualifications

Students must have a reasonable understanding of the basic concepts, principles and techniques involved in the taking of a digital photograph.

Students must have a basic knowledge of image manipulation software.

Module summary

This module will give students a familiarity of more advanced concepts in photography including more advanced technical skills. They will also be introduced to the writings of cultural commentators on photography and be encouraged to use these works to inform their own work. Students will also be encouraged to think how photography can be used as a tool of intellectual discovery and exploration.

Objectives

After studying this module students will be able to apply the knowledge gained from the study of the work of recognised photographers in several fields to influence and improve their own photographic practice. They will have also studied the writings of photographic commentators and writers to inform their work.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. demonstrate a familiarity with advanced concepts, competencies and techniques of (digital) photography;
2. demonstrate a familiarity with the work of significant writers on photography and utilise this thinking in their own work;
3. use image manipulation software to analyse and adjust their images to a high standard;
4. articulate and communicate their aesthetic and technical approach to the making of a digital image for a particular application;
5. understand current issues affecting the making and distribution of the photographic image and how this affects their own practice.

Skills outcomes
Students will be introduced to composition in photography, analysis of the photographic image and image manipulation software skills.

Syllabus

There will be a brief study of the history of photography and parallels drawn between photography as a new technology at its invention and as a new technology in the current 'digital age'. Students will be taught advanced, technical analytical skills to be applied to digital imagery. They will also be introduced to the work of significant writers on photography and be encouraged to use these works to inform their own work. Students will also be encouraged to think how photography can be used as a tool of intellectual discovery and exploration. There will also be an introduction to experimental techniques in photography

Private study

Students will develop their critical skills by studying the work of important photographers (approx. 40 hours). They will also be expected to practice the photographic techniques discussed in the classes by taking their own photographs. They will also be expected to practise the manipulation of digital photographs (approx. 43 hours). There will be online feedback given (6 hours)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In weeks 1 to 6 students produce a photograph that they have taken for feedback in a group situation.
