Module summary

Beginners German 10 credits is for students who have not previously studied German. The emphasis is on achieving a basic level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing and an introduction to German culture. You may want to learn a new language, you may already have an interest in Germany or you may be planning to travel to Germany/Austria/Switzerland - whatever your reason, this module will equip you with some practical language skills and intercultural awareness. Please be aware that if you are interested in progressing to elementary level, you should take a 20-credit module in beginners German.

Objectives

This module aims to introduce students to German and gradually develop their ability to function at beginners' level. Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for that level. They should also develop an awareness of German culture.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to use, commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered
- extract accurately key information from audio material
- understand and make themselves understood by a sympathetic native speaker in specific contexts
- demonstrate some awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Italian and English
- demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammar including the present tense, prepositions, adjectives, formation of the negative
