Objectives
This module will develop an in depth understanding of applications of ethical thinking and cultural awareness in psychotherapeutic counselling practice.Learning outcomes
1. Critically reflect from philosophical and cultural perspectives on the ethical frameworks relevant to counselling and psychotherapy and their application to practice.
2. Demonstrate self-awareness of one's own socio-cultural identities and the relevance of these to the therapy relationship.
3. Demonstrate an in depth understanding of cultural issues in counselling and psychotherapy.
Skills outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:
- Critically analyse psychotherapeutic counselling practice from an ethical perspective.
- Work sensitively with cultural issues in psychotherapeutic counselling practice.
Syllabus
- Perspectives of moral philosophy underpinning the values and ethics of psychotherapeutic counselling (e.g. utilitarianism, virtue ethics, principle-based ethics) and their limitations.
- Applications of the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and other relevant codes of ethics.
- The law and psychotherapeutic counselling practice.
- The culture of counselling and psychotherapy.
- Concepts of culture, race, ethnicity.
- Psychotherapeutic counselling in a diverse society.
- Identity and self-awareness and relevance to therapy
