Module summaryThis module gives students the chance to spend a year developing their performance skills, professionalism and employability skills. They will follow a varied programme of activities focused in the area of performance, which will include taking lessons on their main instrument/voice.
ObjectivesThe module offers students a chance to develop their musical, professional and personal skills through a performance-intensive year, some of which may be undertaken at a partner institution and/or through collaboration with external partner organisations. Students will develop their understanding of what it is to be a musician in the current climate, and their self-reflective and evaluative capabilities.
1. Developing ability and experience in reflective practice, in support of personal/academic development in accordance with School guidelines.
2. Instrumental/vocal development in an appropriate music-focused environment.
3. Advancement in instrumental/vocal ability appropriate to strong progression onto final year Performance.
Musical performing skills
Students’ work will be structured within a framework that provides increasing breadth and depth and opportunities for developing proficiency in the application of concepts and techniques. Students will normally have the opportunity to pursue particular interests and to undertake some autonomous study, especially in their particular area of performance. The learning context will include complex and unpredictable situations which will provide opportunities for students to reflect on their skills and development throughout the year.
Private studyEach student will devise their own programme of work on the module, in consultation with appropriate staff. The workload is expected to be full time, and might include (indicatively, but not exclusively) instrumental/vocal lessons, participation in performance classes as performer and observer, attendance at concerts and other musical events, working with external partners, study at a partner institution, master classes, careers and employability events, language development (in particular, though not explicitly for singers), and time spent reflecting on their performance and professional development.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackEach student will have a supervisor with whom they will be able to meet to discuss progress against agreed aims for the year. Students will receive regular lessons with their instrumental/vocal tutors who will provide ongoing feedback on the development of their performance skills. In addition, students will also have personal tutorial meetings (in line with University policy) at which progress will be discussed and feedback given.
