Module summary

This module examines the critical concepts and theories which have informed recent developments in performance design practice. Beginning with the rise of scenography through the 20th century, we will consider how forms of performance design, in the theatre and beyond, manifest themselves in the 21st century.

Objectives

On this module, students will develop understanding of theories and concepts of performance design which will typically include:
Visuality and visual dramaturgy
Multi-sensorial and ‘syn-aesthetic’ performance
Post-dramatic performance
Audience experience and spectatorship
Spatiality and performance
Interculturality and performance design
Spectacle

To this end they will be asked to read about and discuss topics arising from lectures and then form their own positions as practitioner/theorists through presentation and through writing.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

1. critically evaluate current issues and debates in Performance Design within the wider landscape of the creative and cultural industries;

2. apply theory critically in order to develop an understanding of contemporary performance design practice.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Contribution to seminars in the first 2/3 weeks – informal formative feedback on this will be provided at the first tutorial ;
First tutorial (in wk3 or wk4) will address their short paper topic and plans for this ;
Second tutorial will be an opportunity to discuss (summative) feedback on the presentation and implications for their final essay;
Third tutorial will address their essay plan and their annotated bibliography
