Module summary

This course is designed to ensure that MSc graduates are able to undertake narrative systematic reviews that meet the standard laid out in the PRISMA statement (http://www.prisma-statement.org/)

Objectives

Students should be confident in managing the systematic review process, extracting data, and narratively synthesising evidence from academic journals.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- Formulate a question and develop search terms based on the PICOS framework
- Retrieve, manage and screen references and full-texts in a database
- Undertake data-extraction and make risk-of-bias judgements reliably
- Follow PRISMA guidelines and narratively synthesise evidence.

Skills outcomes
Ability to undertake narrative systematic reviews that meet the standard laid out in the PRISMA statement (http://www.prisma-statement.org/)

Supervisors will be informed of the formal SRR process to ensure parity of student experience independent of supervisor. Supervisors will normally take between 2 and 4 students. Supervisors may attend sessions or meet with their supervisees in weeks 1, 2, 4, 6 & 8.
The module leader will be assisted by two PhD students with experience of conducting systematic reviews that meet the standards of the
PRISMA statement.
The module leader will be assisted by an additional lecturer experienced in systematic review methods during workshops in weeks 5, 7 & 9.
Supervision will include consideration of:
Context appropriate formulation of the research question based on the PICOS framework, drawing on the supervisors' knowledge.
Development of a modular search strategy utilising existing terms that fits the supervisor's expectations regarding retrieval sensitivity /specificity from their knowledge of the literature.
Development of screening criteria that affords sufficient sensitivity / specificity to complete the review in the allotted time.
Development of a data extraction tool that enables the student to answer questions that are relevant to the context of the research area.
Monitoring of the students’ progress towards making recommendations about future research.
Monitoring of report writing.
