Year running 2021/22

Pre-requisite qualifications

We have a number of Applied Projects set up with partner organisations. Students will receive details of the currently available projects and will discuss their interest with the module convenor after they commence their MSc studies. They will be matched up as appropriate and, where more than one student wants to do a specific project, they will need make a case. It will be a normal expectation that those doing Applied Projects will have previous (eg. undergraduate dissertation) experience of empirical research. There are a limited number of projects so we cannot guarantee access. The default will be to do the normal MSc dissertation.

This module is not approved as an Elective

Module summary

This module provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate higher level research and communication skills through the production of an extended piece of written work in the form of an applied project report.

Objectives

This module provides students with the option of undertaking an applied project with external partners in public, private and third sector organisations

To extend students’ critical understanding of key issues, debates and theoretical perspectives pertaining to inequalities and/or media, culture and society;

To provide and consolidate students’ ability to progress and conduct small scale research projects with particular reference to the needs and concerns of a partner organisation;

To produce a synopsis and presentation of findings, or commensurate resources, which engage and inform a non-academic audience, and to reflect on this learning experience as part of the final assessed project work.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will be expected to:

Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of research on inequalities and/or media, culture and society;

Critically analyse the manifestation of and processes shaping social inequalities, or shaping contemporary phenomena in culture, media and society;

Use this knowledge and understanding to design and carry out small scale research on a relevant contemporary issue;

Critically reflect on the applicability of findings to the wider social, cultural and economic context.
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of research strategy and design;

Demonstrate a critical awareness of the methodological issues and ethics involved in conducting research;

Demonstrate the ability to communicate relevant knowledge to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Syllabus

Students will work in collaboration with external partners from the public, private, and third sectors to produce a research project which the organisation finds necessary, relevant and useful. The specific parameters of each project will be agreed between SSP and the external partner. There will be a designated supervisor for each student who will assist with overseeing the final design of the projects.

** the presentation to the partner organisation will form part of the learning on the module and the student will reflect on the value of the presentation and the process of conveying a summary of their work to a non-academic audience in an appendix (800-1000 words) in their final project. In the event of any insurmountable obstacle here alternative presentation arrangements would be made. An alternative option (most relevant to the Media project) will be to deliver a commensurate resource of interest to a non-academic audience, specifically a film or video resource which, again, would be treated as an object for reflective learning and described and assessed through a 800-1000 word appendix
