Year running 2021/22

Pre-requisite qualifications

One year of University mathematics for science, Fourier Series and Complex Numbers.

Module replaces

EARS2190

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

To provide the mathematical foundation for spectral analysis and filter theory as applied to the analysis of seismic and potential field data in applied and pure geophysics.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module students will be able to
-use digital filters in time and frequency domain,
-apply convolution and deconvolution to time series,
-understand the consequences of the digitisation process,
-plan and carry out a digital data acquisition process,
-analyse time and spatial data series.

Syllabus

The Fourier series, discrete Fourier transform and convolution theorem as applied to spectral analysis and filtering of geophysical data. Sampling theorem, aliasing and the Nyquist frequency. Bandpass filtering of seismograms. Autocorrelation and cross correlation. The z-transform deconvolution, 2D Fourier transforms and f-k filtering.
