Module summaryThe module provides an understanding of how knowledge and skills in structural geology and geophysics can be used across a range of exploration, acquisition and storage applications. The module will be in two parts. Part 1 will provide theoretical and practical learning across a range of applications, from ore exploration and deposit modelling through to reservoir determination and geothermal energy acquisition. Part 2 will allow the student to choose a specialisation to explore the application of structural geology in greater depth.
ObjectivesBy the end of the module the student will be able to:
- Identify key structural controls on the resource and/or storage potential across a range of sub-surface applications
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the most important types of sub-surface geo-energy and resource environments in terms of key origins, structural controls, economic importance, potential exploration strategies and environmental impact through the energy transition.
- Demonstrate a detailed understanding of how sub-surface geo-energy and resource environments are controlled by tectonic processes and structures
- Demonstrate a detailed understanding of how structural geology and geophysical knowledge and techniques as well as 3D visualisation and modelling can be used to aid sub-surface geo-energy and resource acquisition and storage

This module comprises two parts:
Part 1 will consider the fundamental structural controls on a range of sub-surface geo-energy and resource applications. This will consider the influence of, for example, fault seal and traps, fracture systems, fault juxtaposition, material properties and permeability and how they act as structural controls across the different environments.
Part 2 will allow the student to choose a specialist field to further develop field-specific concepts and techniques. Options will be a choice of one from either geothermal, hydrocarbon or ores/minerals applications. This part will focus on developing specific in-depth knowledge of the chosen field, including exposure to subject specific software where appropriate. Alongside considering local and regional structural influences this part will also consider geophysical methods used and investigate key structural controls on issues and potential environmental impact in the chosen field. This part will also include a field trip relevant to the option selected.

Private studyPre- and post-class reading and evaluation of prescribed current literature; it is expected that in-class practical material will be completed in private study time and compared with worked examples where given.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackFormative feedback via Q&As on lectures and via practical work presentations and groups discussions thereof. Generic feedback on Report 1 informs preparation of Report 2.
