Module summary

The teaching and assessment methods shown below will be kept under review during 2021-22. If it is not possible to deliver traditional teaching methods, such as lectures and practical classes, we may need to substitute alternative (online) formats of delivery and amend the timetable accordingly. ‘Independent online learning’ may involve watching pre-recorded lecture material or screen-casts, engaging in learning activities such as online worked examples or mini-projects, etc. Students will be expected to fully engage with all of these activities. The time commitment for independent online learning, and also the frequency and duration of online sessions are approximate and intended as a guide only. Further details will be confirmed when the module commences.Where assessments are shown as Online Time-Limited Assessments, the durations shown are indicative only. The actual time permitted for individual assessments will be confirmed prior to the assessments taking place.


This module develops essential skills in interpreting circuit diagrams, building the corresponding physical prototype and using laboratory instruments to test and evaluate the circuit. This module also gives students an opportunity to learn important prctical laboratory skills and engage in a team design project.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Construct and test a prototype electronic circuit and transpose between circuit diagrams and prototype circuits.
2. Use laboratory instruments to diagnose faults and/or test sections of an electronic circuit.
3. Extract relevant information about the electrical characteristics of component parts from a manufacturer’s datasheet.
4. Work as a member of a team to fulfil a design brief.
5. Communicate technical information to a wider audience.

Learning Outcomes 1..3 will be assessed through practical tests. Learning Outcomes 4 and 5 will be assessed by observation of students' achievements in the design project and by the individual contribution summarised in a poster.


Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Circuit prototyping and construction, including soldering and use of prototyping products such as stripboard
Transposing between circuit diagrams and circuit prototypes for circuits with moderate complexity
Prototyping standard circuits such as the transistor H-bridge, and circuits using integrated circuits such as encoders/decoders
Laboratory instruments including oscilloscope, function generator, digital multimeter and laboratory power supply
Interpretation of datasheets, identifying maximum ratings, test conditions, performance limits
Introduction to PCB CAD software, including the use of library parts
Group working skills
System level approach to circuit design
Composition of a simple technical poster
Group design project

Private study

Students are expected to use private study time to consolidate their understanding of course materials, to undertake preparatory work for seminars, workshops, tutorials, examples classes and practical classes, and also to prepare for in-course and summative assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students studying ELEC modules will receive formative feedback in a variety of ways, including the use of self-test quizzes on Minerva, practice questions/worked examples and (where appropriate) through verbal interaction with teaching staff and/or post-graduate demonstrators.
