Students should have achieved a Certificate in Counselling Skills (minimum 100 hours class contact as a coherent group) + experience in the helping role.Students need to be able to demonstrate access to clients within an Agency that offers counselling support

Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- Identify and reflect upon aspects of self and others that enhance and hinder personal development.
- Identify and reflect upon aspects of self and others that enhance or hinder the application of personal awareness and competence in the role of professional counsellor.
- Have both an experiential and a theoretical awareness of dynamic processes of the group interactions.
- Reflexively consider issues of change identified in personal therapy.
- Identify the significance of the above in their own counselling practice.
Syllabus
Building upon the BACP recommendations for the personal development of counsellors in training, students will extend their awareness of self and the central importance of personal development to counsellor practice. They will engage in systematic structured self-awareness activities exploring both self-disclosures and the disclosures of others on aspects of personal life histories and feelings engendered in the here-and-now. Opportunity will be afforded to explore phenomena experienced in the transference/countertransference relationship and the effects of the group dynamics.
The group will negotiate an agreed view towards trust, confidentiality, the nature of disclosures, and the group environment. Learning will be facilitated by:
- an open and shared oral reflection on the group experience;
- maintaining a personal learning journal on perceptions of self and others' experiences within the group and the impact upon personal development inside and outside of the group environment;
- the sharing of the journal process with a colleague;
- evaluating the group experience;
- discussion of theories of group interaction;
- engage in in personal therapy to a minimum number of hours across Years 1& 2 with a counsellor from the list available in the Counselling Department.
This module should reflect aspects of a therapeutic group experience and the paralleling of the learning dynamics present within such groups.

Summative Personal Learning Statement - drawn from peer group and tutor feedback comments on formative 15 minute presentation (after 20 weeks 3000 words approx - Pass/Refer)
