Module summary

This module will provide students with the basic Healthcare Science skills to work supervised within practice environments.

Objectives

This module will enable students to gain skills and experience of Cardiovascular Physiology through introduction to the range of cardiovascular services provided in the specialisms and the interaction with patients and patient-centred practice. On completion of this module the student will be able to perform some routine investigations in adult patients, specifically electrocardiography (ECG) and resting blood pressure measurement (BP), and will also apply knowledge and develop and build their professional practice safely.

Learning outcomes
1. Perform, under direct supervision, a routine 12-lead electrocardiogram in accordance with local health and safety regulations.
2. Measure blood pressure using an automatic device.
3. Observe the range of non-invasive and invasive tests/procedures undertaken in the department and the process of informed consent and identify examples of good practice with respect to professionalism and patient-centred care.
4. Observe the work of the healthcare science workforce and how it contributes to the patient pathways relevant to Cardiac Physiology.
5. Adhere to appropriate standards of professional practice.

Skills outcomes
Development of practical skills for basic cardiovascular, respiratory and sleep sciences.

Syllabus

Control infection risks in accordance with departmental protocols when performing routine electrocardiography and resting blood pressure measurement.

Minimise risks and hazards in compliance with health and safety policies when performing routine electrocardiography and blood pressure measurement.

Use effective communication skills within the healthcare environment, adapting communication style and language to meet the needs of the listener.

Obtain a suitably completed request form, greet the patient and check patient ID for routine electrocardiography and office blood pressure measurement.

Prepare the environment, set up and calibrate equipment ready for use for routine electrocardiography and office blood pressure measurement, including, if appropriate, resuscitation equipment.

Evaluate the technical quality of the ECG recording and blood pressure measurements.

Treat the patient in a way that respects their dignity, rights, privacy and confidentiality while undertaking routine electrocardiography and office blood pressure measurement.

Perform, under direct supervision, a routine electrocardiogram in accordance with local health and safety regulations.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored using a tripartite approach in accordance with School policy.
The work based mentor and student will have regular meetings to monitor progress. This will be communicated via progress reports to the university staff. Face to face tripartite meetings will occur three times per academic year.
There are 6 tutorials encompassed within the module, these will be utilised to monitor progression within the work based profiles and provide academic support for the summative assessment. Where applicable inter-professional tutorials will be utilised to support practice development.

Portfolio A portfolio of clinical evidence (Pass/fail) No compensation between components. Both components must be passed. Failure of either component will result in that part being resubmitted within the August assessment period. Reflective essays will be subject to re-submission in line with school policy. There is no 3rd attempt for practice and failure at 2nd attempt will result in students requiring to withdraw from the programme due to academic failure. Practice hours must be completed prior to commencing any further practice modules.
