Module summary

This module allows students to develop a detailed knowledge and understanding of paediatric radiography.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to enable students to explore the challenges of paediatric radiography. Students will gain a detailed understanding of the different needs of children and young people and how to adapt their radiographic technique in order to ensure a successful outcome for a range paediatric imaging examinations, including child protection and non-accidental injury.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

- Develop a detailed understanding of the different physical, psychological and emotional needs of children and young people
- Critically reflect on how to adapt practice in order to deliver person centred care to children, young people and their families
- Explore the role of the imaging department in the diagnosis and treatment of a range of common paediatric pathologies
- Evaluate the role of the radiographer in child protection
- Critically explore the role of the imaging department in non-accidental injury cases

Skills outcomes
- Advanced communication skills for paediatric radiography
- Adaptation of technique for paediatric radiography
- Problem solving for challenging paediatric radiographic examinations

- Common paediatric imaging examinations & pathologies
- Ethical & legal frameworks that govern paediatric healthcare
- Family centred care in the imaging department
- Compare and contrast a typical imaging department and a paediatric imaging department
- The role of the radiographer in child protection
- The role of the imaging department in non accidental imaging cases

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A tutorial is given to aid student understanding of the essay titles and provide formative feedback. In addition students receive feedback on their essay as i) a plan and ii) a draft at appropriate times during the module.
