Objectives

To introduce students to a range of research topics in the broad field of biochemistry, and develop their ability to collate, critically analyse, and describe scientific information.

Students are recommended to attend five advanced topics.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Discuss in-depth a range of research topics at the forefront of medical biochemistry;
2. Select and critique scientific information obtained from reputable sources and
integrate the material to provide an up to date account of the topic under
discussion;
3. Demonstrate advanced communication skills through presentation of the
material in written format.

Syllabus

The module will comprise a series of advanced topics reflecting current developments across medical biochemistry. In each topic lecturers will present current thinking and research findings, referring students to the research literature. Students will be required to read the up-to-date research literature to advance their knowledge beyond the material presented in the lectures.

This module is mutually exclusive with other Advanced Topics modules in this semester within the faculty of Biological Sciences.

Signal transduction in cancer and cardio vascular disease
Molecular oncology
Streptomyces, the Antibiotic Makers

Students should note that the following information is for guidance only. The actual time required for the various elements will vary between students.
- 25 hours of self-study per advanced topic (125 hours)
- 45 hours - examination and preparation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

This module will be delivered online through digital platforms such as Collaborate Ultra and Microsoft TEAMS. The digital platform used for delivery of each session is included in the online module timetable. Teaching on this module will include a combination of learning approaches including live sessions (e.g. interactive lectures, Q&A sessions), pre-recorded sessions, group activities, discussion boards and quizzes. To maximise your learning and performance on the modules, you are expected to engage fully with all of the activities set. A detailed explanation of the
module structure and the associated learning activities will be described at the start of the module.
