CAPE1020Engineering Science 1

Co-requisites

CAPE2010Engineering Science 2

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of the module, students will:
- Be familiar with the theory and industrial applications of electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic power
- Appreciate the techniques used for the measurement of industrial process parameters
- Have a basic knowledge of process control
- Have obtained experience in working with process equipment and diagnostic tools
- Have developed a critical awareness of the quality of data generated and quantifiable sources of error
- Have developed skills in data collection and recording, report writing and team working
- Have gained on-site practical experience of process operations.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will be:
- Acquiring a working knowledge and understanding of fluid power systems and pumping in an industrial setting.
- Developing critical understanding of the principles and limitations of the most common methods of measurement and control of chemical engineering process variables (temperature, gas and condensed matter flows, pressure, composition).
- Developing a range of laboratory skills by performing laboratory experiments on fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and process control. In addition, they will develop on-site practical skills and industrial practice through conducting industrial activities. This would enable students to acquire skills in data collection and analysis, technical report writing, team working, problem solving, and identifying sources of experimental error.

Skills outcomes
The module provides students with knowledge and practical experience of equipment and operating systems commonly used in process engineering.

Syllabus

Fluid power systems - pump design and selection, electric motors, furnaces, boilers and turbines.
Measurement - techniques and equipment used for flow-rate, low and high temperature ranges, vapour-phase composition.
Control - automatic control, block diagram and transfer function, feedback control systems, feedback controller tuning.
Experimental - students work in groups and carry out a series of experiments designed to demonstrate various aspects of fluid flow measurement, heat transfer, thermal conductivity, pump characteristics and process control.
Process plant experience - visits to process plants with possible computer based learning to gain on-site practical experience.
