Successful completion of year 1 of the BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy programme.

Module summary

This module prepares the student to treat patients safely under close supervision in the clinical environment as a dental therapist. Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, e-learning and clinical simulation within the clinical skills environments. The student is required to pass a number of clinical milestones within the clinical skills environment prior to progressing to the provision of dental therapy treatment on patients in the clinic.The module includes several jointly taught lectures with the dental surgery programme. This continues to foster the ethos of dental team working within both programmes and the school.

Objectives

The module aims to equip the student with the knowledge and practical skills to identify and manage common dental diseases affecting both adults and children. The learning will link the relationship between pathological processes and clinical findings. The module also expands on basic dental materials science from previous modules and links this to clinical practice. The module emphasizes awareness of hazards and the adoption of safe working practices.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate through simulation a working knowledge of the practical skills required to practice as a dental therapist.
2. Describe the aetiology, diagnosis and management of dental diseases and the use of dental materials, as applied to Clinical Practice.
3. Demonstrate an ability to perform operative dentistry safely.

Syllabus

Clinical skills will be developed, including:
• Restorative adult clinical skills
• Paediatric clinical skills
• Advanced periodontal disease management
• Dental Radiography
• Simulated management of adult and paediatric cases
The module will cover the management of dental diseases including dental caries and tooth wear, affecting both primary and secondary dentitions.
It will consider restorative treatment options including the management of the pulp-dentine complex, the use of pre-formed crowns and pulpotomies in the primary dentition.
There will be an introduction to the indications and processes involved in the extraction of primary teeth.
Dental materials relevant to the practice of dental hygiene and dental therapy will be considered.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Individual verbal and/or written feedback are provided during the supervised clinical simulation sessions.
Monitoring and feedback on progress on the clinical skills log takes place throughout the year allowing the teaching staff to gauge progress of the student cohort and the individual student allowing provision of appropriate support.
Seminar participation gauges general progress and allows identification of any learning issues that need immediate attention.
