Module summary

This module is offered as a discovery module to students who have a good pass in Italian at A2 or AS level. This module consolidates knowledge of intermediate Italian and explores more difficult structures and vocabulary. As these modules are compulsory for Italian degree students, the number of discovery places may be limited. Students wishing to take discovery Italian from scratch are directed to modules offered by the Language Centre, with the code FLTU.The textbook Affresco italiano B1 (see reading list for details) is linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The CEFR describes language ability on a scale of levels from A1 for beginners up to C2.The incorporation of the CEFR demonstrates:- the validity of our language programme- facilitates students' understanding of the level they achieve- logical progression through levelsKnowledge of the CEFR enhances:- students' engagement with the language learning experience- students' motivation and progress during their experience abroad;- educational and occupational mobility thanks to the transferability of the CEFR system

Objectives

This is a consolidation module for students with A or AS Level Italian. It will reinforce basic and more complex grammatical structures and enable students to build up a broad vocabulary in a variety of specialised areas.
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- recognise, describe and use the essentials of Italian grammar and syntax;
- express themselves fluently and accurately in Italian and in English;
- read authentic texts in Italian on a variety of subjects;
- understand and participate in general conversation in Italian on a variety of subjects;
- demonstrate an awareness of a variety of registers in spoken and written Italian;
- organise their own independent study of the Italian language.

Learning outcomes
1. Consolidation of knowledge of basic Italian grammar and vocabulary;
2. exploration of more difficult structures;
3. introduction to awareness of register in language;
4. fostering of skills in written and spoken Italian.
5. Oral classes will pursue the goal of enabling students to communicate intelligibly in spoken Italian on everyday topics, and on such more advanced subjects as are within students' range.
6. In written classes, a similar range of subject matter and register will be used, and certain specific grammar points and structures will be targeted.
