Objectives

This module provides students with the knowledge and skills to understand and appreciate the two core processes – entrepreneurship and innovation – through which a value for society is created. Theoretical insights link with experience of practitioners to ensure a thorough exposure to many building blocks that constitute entrepreneurial and innovation processes.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Apply conceptual frameworks and tools for managing under uncertainty and ambiguity in emerging and establishing companies
- Deploy appropriately strategic decision-making for growing entrepreneurial companies as well as strategically renewing established ones
- Identify, critically evaluate and manage opportunities to create and sustain competitive advantage in organizations of various sizes and ages
- Apply effectively different conceptual perspectives on entrepreneurship and innovation and evaluate the links between entrepreneurship and innovation
- Critically analyse in-depth case studies of entrepreneurial ventures

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Apply in context a specific skill set and competencies to formulate a strategic analysis for an entrepreneurial venture


Syllabus

Indicative content
Understanding Entrepreneurial and Innovation Processes
Concepts that explain entrepreneurial and innovation processes and establishes a strong conceptual link between entrepreneurship and innovation are introduced. Behavioural, cognitive and institutional foundations of entrepreneurship are introduced Strategic entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial theories of the firm make appropriate topics for transition from entrepreneurship into understanding innovation as an organizational capability inseparable from entrepreneurial agency. Discussion on emergent topics that form foundations for the individual assignment.

From theory to practice for analysing entrepreneurial ventures
The perspectives of practitioners that hold different roles in entrepreneurial and innovation processes. The overall topic of health innovation is introduced. Health is considered as important growth area by venture capitalist and provides multiple opportunities for entrepreneurs. Framework for strategic analysis of entrepreneurial venture is introduced to guide students through the group assignment.

Entrepreneurial journey in an emergent technology field (cases and practices)
The theoretical focus is brought together with practical cases. Case study of corporate venture QNL enables analogical learning with theoretical insights

The module provides a strategic perspective on entrepreneurial and innovation processes in different types of organizations well beyond the narrow aspects of managing SMEs and different types of family businesses.
