Module summaryThe module is designed for beginners or near-beginners. Students will spend considerable time memorising Latin morphology and learning its syntax, as well acquiring as a working vocabulary of ca 700 words common to Medieval Latin texts. The skills gained in this module will form a sound basis for acquiring a full competency in Latin grammar and syntax through subsequent self-study or formal study. (Some sentence structures, certain tenses of the subjunctive and practice with oratio obliqua will not be covered.) The students will acquire the capability of translating easier Medieval Latin narrative and documents with the aid of dictionary and grammar.
ObjectivesThe module is designed to equip students with (1) an introductory knowledge of Latin morphology, and syntax (both Classical and Medieval), (2) a working vocabulary of ca 700 words, (3) the ability to recognise noun-adjective agreement, and translate noun cases, (4) the ability to translate most verb forms, (5) the ability to analyse (parse) and translate sentences containing compound, subordinate and conditional clauses, and (6) the ability to translate short passages of Medieval Latin (Biblical or Ecclesiastical) with dictionary and grammar.
Students will acquire the abilities listed above.
In addition students will gain a grammatical meta-language useful for the analysis of texts in Indo-European languages.
Provides experience in translation and interpretation of primary-source materials for Western European history.
RECOGNISING THE PARTS OF SPEECH; CONCEPTS OF DECLENSION AND CONJUGATION
1 Pronunciation(s); Nouns and Prepositions; Declensions 1 & 2; Prepositional Phrases; Direct statements of equivalence; Case used to link nouns and to modify verbs
2 Adjectives: Agreement (gender, number, and case); Verbs (overview, present system, present indicative active, conjugations); Use of Direct and Indirect Objects (Collins 4-6)
WORK ON VERBS: ALL TENSES BUILT ON THE PRESENT SYSTEM AND THE PERFECT SYSTEM (INDICATIVE MOOD; ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICES).
3 The rest of the Present System: Imperfect (past continuous) and Future tenses, Passive voice; Causal and Object clauses (Collins 7-9)
4 Perfect Active System, three tenses: Pluperfect, Perfect and Future Perfect; Using the relative pronoun to make adjectival clauses, or to connect sentences together (Collins 10-11)
5 Use of infinitives to complete meaning of certain verbs; Perfect Passive System (three tenses with the auxiliary verb sum and the past passive participle; Simple time clauses; Review of all forms of verb encountered so far (Collins 12-13)

6 Declension 3 nouns in all genders; Several ways of using cases; Concessive clauses. (Collins 14-15)
7 Declension 3 adjectives and Declension 4 nouns; Present participles as adjectives as adverbs and to make their own clause (ablative absolute); Two more irregular verbs (Collins 16-17)
8 Future active and passive participles and their use with auxiliary verbs to form compound tenses; Review of all participles; Declension 5 nouns; Imperative Mood; Personal pronouns

Private studyOnline comprehension tests, drills and exercises in module VLE to be completed using the module text for reference and review.
Memorisation of paradigms and vocabulary; Revision of module text for exams.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackVLE continuing assessment is monitored weekly to monitor progress and diagnose any difficulties.
Workshop and Clinic tutors explain concepts, give supplemental drills and exercises and individualised guidance continually. Clinics are integral to the success of the module providing clarification and practice that supplements their intensive study of grammar.
Students with learning or other difficulties are encouraged to come to an office hour for additional guidance and practice.

This is not an extensive module revision but a revision to the timing of the assessed elements. The first two exams will delivered via the VLE during weeks 6 and 11 examining the grammar learned during those weeks. The first will count 15% and the second 35% percent of the module mark and will replace the current grammar exam 1 currently given in the formal examination period (and counting 50% of the module mark). The current exam 2 (on translation) will still be administered in the January examination period and will still count 50% of the module mark.
