Module summary
Introducing the 70% of the Earth's surface not covered by other courses! Study the biology, physics, chemistry and geology of the ocean.Oceanic processes which will be covered include:- the properties and circulation of sea-water; - the shape and depth of the sea-floor, the deposits and resources found on the sea bed. You will also study the oceans as an environment for life including water chemistry, food chains including the unique hydrothermal vent ecosystems, fishing and finally see how man is changing the oceans. This module is taught in semester 1 through lectures and is assessed by two coursework essays with a 1000-word limit each.Objectives
To provide details of the geological and chemical processes and products of seas and oceans.Syllabus
- The nature of the sea-floor, its deposits and resources
- The hydrologic cycle; properties and circulation of sea-water
- Oceanic environments; marine food chains
- Pollution
- Hydrothermal processes
- Marine geology.
